Willow shifted from foot to foot outside the front door, waiting for the post to arrive as she had done every day for the past two weeks after she had entrusted false secret stories with each of her suitors, waiting for one of them to appear in the papers. She loosened her grip on her silk shawl, as the morning was proving to be the warmest since their arrival. She stared at the watercolor sky and watched the clouds part and dawn peek above the barren trees, a sea gull screeching in the distance. Part of her longed to read the headline of the morning paper and discover the traitor behind the false news and have done with it, while another part ached at the thought of finding one of her suitors in a lie. At the sight of a rider coming up the drive, Willow rolled from her heels to her toes and back, huffing at the overwhelming anxiety building in her chest that was slowly tightening and climbing up to her throat.

The rider no longer gaped at the sight of her outside. Instead, he reached for his cap and lifted it to her in greeting. “Good morning, Miss Dupré.”

She nodded, her attention on his satchel as he retrieved the post and handed it to her before turning and urging his mount into a trot. Her fingers trembled, and she dropped the mail in her haste to open the paper and read the headline. “Well, that takes care of that.” She finally had her man. Willow folded the paper and ducked back inside, pulling off her wraps before heading to the library.

The scullery maid started from her place before the fire and moved to rise, but Willow motioned for her to stay, smiling her thanks as she tossed her things atop one of the couches and sank into an oversized chair for her entertaining read that would divulge all sorts of delightfully fabricated tidbits, including a false business plan that would hopefully send Wellington down a rabbit trail. But the article did not humor her in the least, and she found herself watching the maid, kneeling on a sheet before the fireplace and brushing the soot into her pan before dumping the contents into a tin pail.

Willow ran her hand over her face, the truth stinging. How could she not have known it was Archie before? The articles had been heavily focused on the others, yet whenever he was mentioned, it was quite favorable . . . well, besides one article where he must have attempted to throw her off the trail by disparaging himself for his dandy habits. Clever fellow. But she couldn’t keep her happiness at bay, for she was so relieved that it was not Cullen or sweet Fritz who had betrayed her. Though she had never really suspected Kit, she was relieved all the same to be certain she knew the culprit’s identity. He had most likely hoped she had blamed the only person openly connected with the papers, but Chandler Starling was a man of honor .
